“You must have a passion outside of work.”

“Your work or your job shouldn’t define who you are.”

“Work-life balance is key to success.”

“Your job should just be a means to an end.”

These and an endless number of variations of this type of advice are almost fashionable. Yet, if you are realistic about it, the truth behind these statements is questionable at best.

Before you start to shake your head in disagreement and assume I am a workaholic or a corporate slave who is about to lecture you on the importance of your job, that’s not my intention at all.

Hear me out.

Think of any famous people — or your idols, or someone you’re a fan of.

I won’t judge or make assumptions — I’ll just go with a public source. Here’s the YouGovAmerica Most Admired List of 2021.

  1. Barack Obama
  2. Bill Gates
  3. Xi Jinping
  4. Christiano Ronaldo
  5. Jackie Chan
  6. Elon Musk
  7. Lionel Messi
  8. Narendra Modi
