We Raised an On-Demand Generation, and the Free Subscription’s Run Out
Growing up getting all you want, adult life is a harsh reality
Most of us have read, watched, or know about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory — one of the most significant children’s novels of all time. The book was far ahead of its times in that it showcased the different ways that parenting can go wrong. It seemed all too exaggerated, but maybe it wasn’t.
Let’s take the case of Veruca Salt. The little girl had a rich dad who’d fulfill her every wish by throwing money at it. She was raised in such a way that she didn’t know that “No” could ever be the answer to a wish.
Her wishes were her parents’ commands.
Sure, most of us are not a fraction as rich as the billionaire businessman Mr. Salt was. But thanks to technology, and a combination of lazy parenting, we might have raised generations of Veruca Salts.
The trouble is that when these generations hit adulthood — as many of them have — the reality of life hits them, and hits them really hard.
