We Need to Talk About Toilet Paper

Why are we still using that (for) shit?

One of the most curious immediate reactions of the commoner to the pandemic outbreak was the mad rush for toilet paper. We’ve all read about it and heard about it — so that’s not what I am going to focus on.

However, when places like Hong Kong and later America saw a mad rush for toilet paper, a billion and more Indians, Japanese and many others scratched their heads and wondered — how is that an essential commodity?

Toilet paper is probably the biggest sign of humanity’s mass stupidity and herd mentality.

There’s always a debate between water and toilet paper as the preferred way of cleaning your behinds after you take a dump, but I don’t get how that debate isn’t settled already, once and for all!

Instead, the global toilet paper industry is a thriving and growing one with its size estimated at $26bn in 2020 and anticipated to reach nearly $40bn in 2028.

The use of toilet paper made some sense and for good reason, but in the modern world, it’s a no-brainer. Let me address all the different aspects of the debate, so you can tell me how there isn’t a clear winner.

#1 — The main purpose — cleaning up
