The green felt of the poker table looked like a harmless and equal playing field. But “equal” was as far from the truth as could be.

Across me was a poker pro who had been playing poker at the highest level for the past 8 years. She had quit her traditional job for her love of poker, derived from her love for math.

She’d amassed millions of dollars in earnings from the game alone. To my right, was another intimidating poker pro — this one could well have been the definition of a poker face. With his signature hoodie and shades on, he had an ice-cold expression on his face.

He continued to play around with his chips like those professional players on TV often do.

Saying that I was “intimidated” was an understatement.

Yet, the beauty about the game of poker is that each one of us is dealt two cards, none aware of what the other holds. The table has the same five cards for each player — and that is what brings us all towards a semblance of equality.

I decided to leave reputations at the door and do what I had learned I needed to do. Play the game with all my learnings from the past few months of my foray into…
