The internet and social media have been a great leveler. They have provided access to a certain level of audience to everyone who has a basic device and an internet connection.

An aspiring artist can showcase their work to the world without needing an art exhibition and the costs associated with it, and a budding writer can publish on Amazon at practically zero cost and access billions of people as a potential audience.

While this all sounds amazing, the hidden reality that isn’t discussed often enough is the huge downside of this convenience.

While bridging the gap between the haves and the have-nots, the internet has created other, far bigger issues that aren’t obvious to the naked eye.

The “convenience” caps your success before it begins

I, myself, as a novice writer am a victim of this. Ten years ago, if I wanted my work to reach large pools of people, I would have looked at a few different options.

These would have ranged from seeking a traditional magazine or journal for short-form content, and a publisher for a novel or book or other long-form content.
