There was a phase in my life when I had to accompany any social meal with an explanation of two of my dietary or consumption preferences.

I don’t drink alcohol — at all.

And, I’ve always been a vegetarian, throughout my life.

“Is it a religious choice?”

“Have you ever TRIED alcohol? How do you have fun without drinking?”

“How do you get enough protein in your diet with no meat? So do you eat fish at all? Or egg? Or dairy?”

And a whole barrage and variety of other questions that go with it.

This was mostly during my college days and the early stages of my career. The questions don’t necessarily completely end, but now I am just so used to answering them.

I’ve almost got a prepared script.

“I am a vegetarian, not a vegan, so yes, dairy is OK. No, it’s not religious at all.”

“I am usually fine having fun while still not being artificially uninhibited by the alcohol in my blood — thank you.”

But, as is always the case, when you’ve got one thing figured out, life throws you another…
