I “Tried Out” a Life Sans My 9-to-5 and Here Is What I Found Out

Getting paid without doing something proactively and daily to earn that money i.e. passive income is a dream everyone seems to be chasing.

The proponents of the FIRE or Financial Independence retiring early movement, or the ones who swear by “side hustles” turning into steady regular income replacement solutions — everyone’s running that same race towards the holy grail.

For the past 100+ days, I’ve been getting paid my regular corporate salary — without having to work for a single day.

My wife and I were blessed with our daughter (our second child) in early February, and since then I’ve been on a 20-week paid parental leave, that my employer provides to all new parents (irrespective of gender and form of childbirth).

While I’ve focused on our daughter and my wife and done the best I could as a father and a husband, I also wanted to use this time to see what a life without a full-time job looks like.

As much as it has been my dream to retire from “formal” employment at the age of 35 (coming November — so I’ve got about 5 months), living out the experience made me realize things I hadn’t foreseen.

Stay-at-home-dad who "retired" from a 12-year career in finance at the age of 35. Curious thinker with an opinion on nearly everything and is here to share it.
