Giving Away Money Is the Laziest Form of Charity

“If I had so much money, I’d give it away” is a stupid idea

I’ve seen enough and more criticism of the wealthiest people in the world and how they keep all this money to themselves, instead of just giving it away to the poor.

I recently read an article that said something like “The Wrong People are Rich” and it essentially talked about how the author would do such amazing things if (s)he had all the money, while the rich didn’t care. (S)he’d give it all away to poor people, feed the hungry, go on to GoFundMe and randomly give $1000 to as many people as (s)he could.

I don’t intend to link to the article or name the person — because I frankly don’t remember, nor this is meant to name and shame. The author’s “intent” was probably right — sure, we’d all be very generous “if we were billionaires.”

It’s just that the “if” is a rather big one.

Also, I’ll tell you why giving away your money and writing dollar cheques isn’t the best way to do charity.

The Giving Pledge has 231 signatories as of Dec, 2021

The pledge essentially is a way for these signatories to pledge a majority of their net worth to charity, during or after their lifetimes.
