contrary to what u may think, I have only been away from India 5 yrs n still spend a few months there every year. It is a country with many flaws and it was never a cakewalk chsnging the mentality of 1.4 bn people. But it starts small n at some point becomes an avalanche of change. I dont imagine we as a society even acknowledged transgender folks as existent a decade ago, but now I have worked with openly transgender colleagues in India, had friends that are openly out and OK n living fine with it.
It isnt everywhere yet and it is far from a win but it is a start.
There is no progress at the broad level if u want to look at it from that lens but there is a lens that will show u there is some progress which is better thsn none.
