Choice or Objectification? Grid Girls in Motorsports to Ring Girls in Boxing
The never-ending debate and two sides of the coin
I realized this past weekend that my cousin is quite a fan of motorsports.
I was over at his place when he had the Euro Sports channel on for the entire duration, watching a Moto GP and switching between the sequence of Formula 3, 2 and 1 races.
I recall as a kid being fascinated by Formula 1 as well, back in the good times of Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. My cousin, eight years my junior, seemed to have carried that love well into his twenties.
We were still at the preparations of the bike race, when I noticed scantily clad women holding umbrellas over the head of the stars of the show — the motorcycle racers.
For my generation, Valentino Rossi dominated everything to do with bike racing, but today there’s clearly more competition at the top.
Yet, there’s been one consistent trend that’s carried on from Rossi to today’s crop of racers.
Grid girls — the stunning models, often sporting branded attires while holding up umbrellas to protect the riders from the sweltering heat ahead of their races.
