Canada and Australia Are Quietly Gaining Ground on America

The writing’s on the wall, but no one wants to see it

The other day I was catching up with my best friend from my high school days back in India. She moved to Canada with her husband about three years ago (or was it two or four?). They’re a smart, highly educated couple — she has a Ph.D. and is now a contractual associate professor in one of the Canadian universities, and her husband is in data analytics.

She beamingly announced to me that one of our other common friends, who she’s very close to was also moving to Canada in January 2022. This other friend is a doctor from one of the best medical schools in India.

At this point, a good portion of my extended family has moved to Canada or Australia. There’s also a small segment that is still in America, but most of the ones that originally moved to America have now made Canada their home.

An investment banker friend of mine who worked here in Hong Kong for a good six years has also recently got a PR in Australia and shifted bases.

All of my other Indian friends constantly joke (or not) about applying for Canadian citizenship on our high school WhatsApp group. I am convinced half of them have already done it — and it isn’t really a joke, they just don’t want to…
