A Birthday Wish to My Son on His 2nd

And a message to every child who is growing up in these strange times

As hard is it for each one of us to go through these strange times that we’re living in, I sometimes feel what it is like being a child growing up. My son firmly believes that the only way he knows we’re about to go out of our homes is when we have our masks on — so his plea for going for an outing is —

“Papa, mask…Mumma, mask!”

The last time he saw his grandparents in person was about a year ago since we haven’t been able to travel home since. He’s also had phases where he’s been limited to the indoors because playgrounds are closed, and the only way he’s seen strangers is with masks on.

So today, on his 2nd birthday, I thought of writing a poem to him, which when he is old enough to read and understand, will remind him that this isn’t the normal world we know — and I hope it doesn’t stay this way for too long.

You may not believe me when I say,
this world isn’t all blue n black cloth faces.
But I hope that one day see you may,
that we don’t treat people based on their color or races.

It’s hard for you to fully understand,
that this world is bigger than these four…
