9 Lessons from My Just-Turned-90 Grandpa’s Life

My paternal grandfather turned 90 earlier this month and he has always been one of the most inspiring figures in my life.

He has always been a storyteller and a poet and has had more experiences in his life than most of us can dream of.

He lost his mother at age 4 and was raised in a village in pre-partition India. He walked 5 miles each day to school for as long as he can remember, as early as 6 years of age.

Yet, today he has raised a family that anyone with any means would be proud of. Here are the learnings from his life so far – and hopefully he has many more years to add to the list.

#1 Life is long enough for you to counter lack of luck with sheer will

He was the youngest of three kids with an older brother and the eldest sibling an older sister. His sister was like a motherly figure to him having lost his mother as a young kid.

Education was hard, but my great-grandpa found the means to send the kids to school, and my grandpa found the will to study.

Grandpa also had an acute eyesight problem from a very young age and got very thick glasses as a kid. He…
