4 Sexist Trends We’ve Accepted as Normal

Hint #1: recall the iconic Baywatch opening video

I was watching one of my favorites shows the other day probably for the 10th time — F.R.I.E.N.D.S. I bet not many of you have done the same so you’ll forgive the madness. It was the episode where Joey and Chandler are discussing Baywatch and watching in awe as the opening video plays and swimsuit-clad women including Pamela Anderson run towards them in all their glory.

If you don’t recall the iconic Baywatch intro video — here’s a refresher.

David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson probably reached the peak of their fame thanks to the show — and their depiction as life-savers and sex symbols — all at the same time.

However, I digress. So, what’s so sexist about this? Take a look at Hasselhoff and the other guys and all their female counterparts. The men are proudly barechested, while women aren’t. Of course, this isn’t just because this show aired in 1989. The standards for men and women are different in many ways — not just in terms of what is acceptable clothing.

#1 — Shirtless runs for men, but none for women?
